Myomectomy

A uterine fibroid is a benign tumor that originates from the smooth muscle layer and surrounding connective tissue of the uterus. They grow during a woman's life under the stimulation of estrogen and progesterone and when they become large enough may cause multiple symptoms. These may include:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Prolonged menstrual periods
  • Pelvic pressure or pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Difficulty emptying your bladder
  • Constipation
  • Backache or leg pains
  • Infertility

Fibroids may sometimes be treated medically, however many of their symptoms are related to their location and size, and may require definitive surgical management.

Traditionally, fibroids often led to women requiring a hysterectomy, but our doctors specialize in minimally invasive surgeries to remove the fibroids (myomectomy) by laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. We also are now the first office in Sarasota to perform the new Myosure Myomectomy, offering women an in-office, outpatient treatment for submucosal fibroids that cause irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding.
